The Department of Medical Informatics was established in June 2018, under the leadership of Yun Liu, who serves as the Dean of Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital and the Chief Scientist for a National Key Research and Development Program. The Department currently consists of a staff of 14 members, including 2 full-time professors, 4 associate professors, and 8 lecturers.

     The Department has been recognized for its contributions to university-level teaching reform projects and has spearheaded in provincial-level teaching reform initiatives, including “a study on the quality standards of undergraduate teaching in intelligent medical engineering propelled by multimodal big data”, and “an investigation into the ethics and governance of medical artificial intelligence”. Furthermore, the Department has played a pivotal role in editing a textbook Hospital Information Systems for the People’s Health Press, and has authored or edited six additional textbooks, covering topics such as hospital information security and health data analysis.

     In China, the Department has stayed at the forefront of research and disciplinary development in the areas of health information standardization and security systems, participating actively in the establishment of national health information standards. The research in the Department has reached a broad spectrum of topics, including chronic disease management pathways, intelligent drug development, intelligent diagnostics and treatment, intelligent image recognition, and intelligent health data management, with the overarching goal of creating an interdisciplinary and diverse teaching and research platform, promoting interdisciplinary integration, and cultivating well-rounded, high-caliber talents.

     The Department has undertaken over 20 research projects, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Key Research and Development Program. Their scholarly work has been reflected in the publication of over 50 academic papers in internationally renowned journals, including Briefings in Bioinformatics, Bioinformatics, Journal of Cheminformatics, JAMA Network Open, Knowledge-Based Systems, Small, Biomaterials, and Emerging Microbes & Infections. Additionally, the Department has been granted four invention patents and over 40 software copyrights.
